Often, Atlanta based homeowners will call a foundation repair contractor or waterproofing contractor when they see signs of foundation settlement or foundation problems. Who should a homeowner call if they are concerned?
The best person to call is a structural engineer. Why?

- Engineers are trained and licensed to provide solutions. We are held to a high ethical standard and educational standard.
- Contractors may be influenced by the products they offer.
- Contractors may be influenced by sales numbers or sales managers.
- Contractors may be good at some things but not others (water intrusion versus foundation settlement).
- Contractors are often paid by how many jobs they sell.
- As engineers we help homeowners solve problems.
There are many good contractors out there. In fact, I’ve been on both sides of the equation (both as a contractor and now engineer). Making sure you have a well trained contractor takes a considerable amount of time. Big companies have good people, small companies have good people, but both companies may have poorly trained people. Engineers remove the guesswork and allow you, the homeowner, to get the right scope of work and then choose the contractor you feel most comfortable with.
